Oversharing: The Entrepreneur’s Dopamine Trap?

Mar 18, 2025

Hey, tossing out a thought that’s been on my mind lately. I figured one of the biggest mistakes we as entrepreneurs make is talking too much about our projects too soon—just for that quick dopamine kick (sometimes unknowingly). You know how it usually goes? you drop a hint about what you’re working on, people nod and smile, give you a pat on the back, and just like that, you feel like a rockstar after his “fix” (usually for five minutes top) and then the high wears off. But I’ve been wondering if that little ego boost/high is somehow tripping us up more than we realize.

Here’s what I think—the way I see it is that working out our ideas is like gold mining, especially when you’re the type, like me, who’s always juggling a new venture (digging for gold). Spilling the details too early can be like handing over your playbook before the game even starts. You might get some cheers, the applause, your flowers, but you could also tip off or sometimes even create competition or get tangled in unsolicited feedback, before you’ve nail the thing down. I’ve felt that itch to talk about my projects whatever they are, I know how hard it is. But eventually I started to realize the value in keeping it close. It’s less about being sneaky and more about letting the idea grow without everyone’s two cents, organically. I’ve come the realization that the quick hit of validation fades fast—and that the real satisfaction actually comes from unveiling something polished you’ve quietly built.
